International Mental Health Research Fellows

(Fogarty-sponsored program)

The Fogarty International Center-sponsored Training Program in International Mental Health brings physicians and social scientists from China and Indonesia to the Department for advanced training each year. The trainees come to Harvard for periods ranging from one to nine months. In addition to their time at Harvard, some trainees spend an additional month at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, working with our collaborators there. The Training Program in International Mental Health is directed by Professor Byron Good.

Li Ying

Dr. Li is an attending psychiatrist at the Shanghai Mental Health Center in China. She studies anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, in Chinese patients. As a fellow at HMS in 2008-09, she plans to continue work on a quantitative study to explore the social and cultural factors behind anxiety disorders. This research will broaden the understanding of social-cultural factors that shape the character of anxiety disorders in China.

Liu Jin

Dr. Liu is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Center for Mental Health, China-CDC. She is also Project Manager of the World Health Organization / Beijing Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Mental Health as well as Vice Director of the Office of National Mental Health Reform Program, Ministry of Mental Health, China. Dr. Liu’s area of interest is national mental health legislation and policy making. During the 2008-09 fellowship, she plans to focus on evaluating a national pilot program to provide services to persons with schizophrenia in 30 provinces of China, a major innovative program focusing on accessibility and acceptability of services.

Wang Lanlan

Dr. Wang is a resident in psychiatry at the Shanghai Mental Health Center in China. Her area of interest is exploration of the psychosocial issues and ethnic differences that lead to Borderline Personality Disorder. During the 2008-09 fellowship, she plans to compare Chinese and American BPD patients in the areas of childhood trauma, parental rearing styles and defense mechanisms.

Subandi

Subandi is an associate professor and Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University, Jogyakarta, Indonesia. He is a specialist in studies of culture and mental illness, public mental health services, and social and cultural factors that support recovery from psychotic illness. He is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department for April - May 2009, while he revises his doctoral thesis for publication and develops plans for continued research in Indonesia with Byron Good.
