GLOBAL HEALTH & SOCIAL MEDICINE
Dr. Galea’s primary research focuses on understanding the mediating factors that promote or inhibit the knowledge, access and uptake of existing or novel HIV/STI and, more recently, mental health interventions. Most of his HIV/STI research is based in Lima, Peru and is among men who have sex with men and transgender women and increasingly focuses on health disparity research. Mental health research includes exploring interventions for patients with tuberculosis and depression; the implementation of community-based, non-pharmacological depression interventions; and, increasing the uptake of existing depression care services by modifying inhibitory social norms. Finally, Dr. Galea has collaborated most recently with colleagues on a number of descriptive or advocacy publications on the use of incentives in HIV research and mental health care reform in Peru.
Dr. Galea received his AB from the University of Michigan; his Masters in Social Work from the University of Washington; and, his PhD from University College London. From 2001–2016 he lived and worked in Lima, Peru, beginning first with helping implement an NIH-funded HIV prevention and treatment research site. Later, he directed the UCLA Program in Global Health’s Latin American office, and co-founded a gay men’s health center in Lima. From 2010–2016, he worked at the Peruvian branch of Partners In Health (known locally as Socios En Salud), first as director of a large, population based MDR-TB transmission study and then as the organization’s deputy director. He is the recipient of the Abundance Fellowship in Global Mental Health Implementation Science which is supporting the establishment of a community based mental health program at Socios En Salud. Dr. Galea also serves as the co-chair of the mental health working group for The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
