Edwin Mercado MD, MHA

Research Fellow in Global Health and Social Medicine

Edwin finished his medical education and orthopedic training at the University of the Philippines, College of Medicine, and Philippine General Hospital respectively. In his senior year of residency, he was chief resident and awarded most outstanding in research. He has a Master’s in Healthcare Administration degree from University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and a Master of Medical Science in Global Health Delivery in the Harvard School of Medicine. He has published studies on bone graft substitutes and fracture treatment but has lately focused on health economics and delivery models to comply with the Philippine Universal Healthcare Law. He is coordinating with the state-owned Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and local government units for these studies.

Edwin’s research topics are on Private Public Partnerships (PPP) for primary care clinics and universal healthcare public financial systems in the Philippines. He is also assessing the understanding and acceptance of the UHC implementing rules among provider, payer, and regulator stakeholders.
