The humanities have been an irregular presence at Harvard Medical School for many years, but in 2011, a self-organized group of HMS community members began working toward creating a program where doctors are encouraged and supported in embracing their humanities-side. The result, Arts&Humanities@HMS received official recognition as a program. According to Dr. Susan Poires, an associate director of Arts&Humanities@HMS,the program aims to create an enduring center for the arts and humanities at HMS, complementing existing bioethics and social medicine programs.
