Dr. Ganmaa is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) with expertise in TB, vitamin D and nutritional trials. She is a PI of a double-blind, parallel-group individually randomized placebo-controlled, phase III trial, testing the effect of vitamin D3 (14000 IU weekly) on acquiring LTBI in 8,851 school age children (6-16 years) in Mongolia. She founded the Mongolian Health Initiative NGO (MHI), which has conducted nutrition research and capacity building projects in Mongolia since 2004, became a subcontractor of Harvard University in 2016.
MHI is pivotal for strengthening national platforms for nutritional surveillance and epidemiology in Mongolia. From 2011 to 2016, MHI conducted the first detailed prospective assessment of the Mongolian diet by collecting summer and winter diet records and biochemical measurements from healthy urban and rural adults in 7 provinces and Ulaanbaatar. These data were used to compile local food composition data, a dietary analysis system, and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) - critical tools for nutrition research. We also analyzed two local household surveys to evaluate how such platforms could be applied to low-cost nutritional surveillance in Mongolia.
Since 2014, Dr. Ganmaa and her team has advocated tirelessly for multiple-micronutrient food-fortification in Mongolia, and was responsible for introducing a bill for mandatory industrial food fortification to the parliament which is now under legislative review. In 2016, drawing on experience from her TB trial, Dr. Ganmaa and her team launched the Zero TB Mongolia Initiative as part of Harvard Medical School’s global Zero TB Cities effort, to improve national TB diagnosis and treatment. In 2017, MHI launched T2T (Training-to-Teachers) Mongolia, a program designed by Harvard Medical School to train cohorts of medical faculty in Mongolia in more effective teaching methods.
