Dr. Gupta is an internist, pediatrician, and public health specialist, and currently serves as Clinical Director for the NCD Synergies Project and the Lancet Commission for Reframing NCDs and Injuries for the Poorest Billion. He has previously worked as Chief Medical Officer for Partners In Health in Rwanda, where he was responsible for the strategy, design, and implementation of clinical programs provided in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Dr. Gupta is Primary Investigator for the Simplifying Hepatitis C Antiviral Therapy for Elsewhere in the Developing World study, which aims to demonstrated safety and effectiveness of direct-acting antiviral treatment for Hepatitis C in Rwanda and develop treatment models for care. Previously, he served as Primary Investigator for the Population Health Implementation & Training grant, which implemented and then measured the impact of a comprehensive clinical and training program in rural Rwanda. Dr. Gupta is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Harvard School of Public Health, and he completed his residency training at Brigham & Women’s and Boston Children’s Hospitals. He is currently based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dr. Gupta’s research focus is on the treatment outcomes of chronic hepatitis C infection in Rwanda. Through the Simplifying Hepatitis C Antiviral Therapy for Elsewhere in the Developing World(SHARED) study, Dr. Gupta’s team is evaluating the safety and efficacy of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment in Rwanda. The study will also evaluate the epidemiology of hepatitis C infection in Rwanda, qualitatively explore the treatment experience of individual patients, and determine risk factors for treatment failure. The study will use outcomes of the study to develop simplified models for decentralized hepatitis C care delivery and promote greater access to DAAs in low-income countries. Dr. Gupta also studies the state of health service delivery for non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs) in several countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia supporting national NCD policy, planning, and advocacy. Through the Program in Global Noncommunicable Disease and Social Change, he has led the establishment and coordination of national NCDI Poverty Commissions to research the links between NCDIs and poverty and to plan for health sector interventions to address these challenges. Dr. Gupta has previously led operational research of outcomes of a large community-based HIV care and treatment program in rural Rwanda.
