Hyung-Jun Kim is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Republic of Korea. A pulmonologist and physician-scientist, he focuses on chronic pulmonary infections and their long-term consequences, including nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, and post-tuberculosis lung disease. At Harvard, his research centers on post-tuberculosis lung disease, including efforts to define and characterize the condition for research purposes. He developed and validated the BACES score, a simple prognostic index for mortality in NTM-PD that has since been applied to guide decisions on when to initiate treatment. He is the principal investigator of NTM-Rehab (NCT06838442), a prospective cohort study of pulmonary rehabilitation and airway clearance education in NTM-PD, and has served as a site investigator in multinational clinical trials of novel agents for refractory mycobacterial and fungal lung infections. His other work includes artificial intelligence-based prediction models for tuberculosis outcomes and lung-on-a-chip models of NTM infection. He received his medical degree, MS, and PhD from Seoul National University and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Seoul National University Hospital.
