In 2012, the Rwanda Ministry of Health (MoH) launched the Human Resources for Health (HRH) Program. This initiative seeks to increase the quality and quantity of health professionals in Rwanda by improving collaboration between a consortium of U.S. academic institutions, including Harvard Medical School (HMS), HMS-affiliated hospitals, and the Government of Rwanda. The U.S. academic institutions have made a commitment that is unprecedented in global health. They are supplying full-time medical, nursing, health management, and dentistry faculty to collaborate with each other and with leading Rwandan educators in medicine and public health on all aspects of health professionals’ education.
The HRH Program is intended to provide a new framework for development programs emphasizing country ownership of program design and implementation, strategic coordination of international donors and development partners, and long-term sustainability. Both the leading academic institutions in Rwanda and the U.S. universities participating in the HRH Program intend to capitalize on these outstanding opportunities to collaborate on mentored research and educational projects and to generate and disseminate new knowledge in global health delivery.
During the seven-year commitment, the Rwanda HRH Program will provide a new framework for development programs emphasizing country ownership of both program design and implementation, strategic coordination of international donors and development partners, and long-term sustainability.
