Artificial food colorings have been demonstrated to cause mild to severe health consequences in humans. Animal model and human toxicology studies have highlighted genotoxicity, carcinogenic potential, and neurotoxicity as risk factors from consumption of food colorings. Through scientific literary analysis, evaluation of public policy, and interviews, we have found that the largest barrier to minimizing consumption of food coloring in the United States is lack of regulatory policy by the federal government. In this capstone, we introduce a novel dual-media intervention aimed to reduce consumption of food colorings by addressing both the role of the consumer, and the role of state government in minimizing consumption of food colorings. We have designed a novel narrative game intervention, consisting of a children’s storybook, workbook, and infographic. We have also created a social media handle as a database for state, federal, and industry policies regarding food dyes.
