He has over 16 years of experience in teaching, research, and mentorship, with international training and collaborations spanning Bangladesh, Belgium, Germany, and Japan.
Dr. Islam’s research focuses on immunogenomics and the epidemiology of zoonotic and infectious diseases, integrating next-generation sequencing, transcriptomics, and advanced bioinformatics approaches to understand host–pathogen interactions, and immunoregulatory potentials of probiotic bacteria. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, with over 1,800 citations (h-index: 27), and has supervised over 20 graduate students.
He obtained his DVM and MS from BAU (both with Gold Medals), an MS in Epidemiology from the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium, and a PhD in Immunogenetics from the University of Bonn, Germany, where he received the Faculty Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation. He also completed postdoctoral research at Tohoku University as a JSPS Fellow.
At Harvard, his work emphasizes translational research on zoonotic tuberculosis, combining genomic and epidemiological data to inform disease surveillance, treatment responses and control strategies globally. In addition to his academic role, he serves as President of the National Young Academy of Bangladesh, promoting research leadership and international collaboration. He is also actively engaged in veterinary pedagogy, student mentoring and community outreach.
