Dr. Joseph is an Instructor of Global Health and Social Medicine with expertise in orthopedic trauma surgery, trauma care delivery, health systems, and qualitative and quantitative research methods. Her scholarship advances civilian-military engagement in trauma systems strengthening and disaster response, with the aim of improving outcomes from traumatic injuries worldwide. Her work spans high- and low-resource settings, including the United States, the Philippines, Poland, and the Baltics, and covers three major thematic areas: 1) developing high-level frameworks for civilian-military trauma system integration and policy development; 2) advancing systemic quality improvement in trauma health systems, including through tools such as a musculoskeletal trauma performance index for use by national governments; and 3) designing frameworks that enable broad geographical participation, including from under-resourced populations, in the international exchange of trauma care knowledge. Dr. Joseph leads the IMPACT Study (Integrated Military Partnerships and Civilian Trauma Systems), conducted in collaboration with the Uniformed Services University's National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation. Dr. Joseph's work is supported by grants from the Department of Defense Global Health Engagement Research Initiative. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a former National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Lecturer at the University of Warwick. Clinical practice remains integral to her work, ensuring her frameworks stay grounded in the realities of frontline trauma care. Dr. Joseph also serves as Course Director for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and contributes to the administration and strategic planning of the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change, making impactful contributions to strengthening international partnerships in trauma health systems development.
