Chief Medical Officer, Partners In Health Lesotho
Maseru, Lesotho
I am Afom Tesfalem Andom, Chief Medical Officer at Partners In Health Lesotho. I oversee the clinical programs at PIH Lesotho, providing strategic guidance to the clinical department, including the national health reform program, national multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) program, mental health, Laboratory services, primary health care services, and pharmacy and supply chain programs. I also mobilize resources to expand quality health services to the Basotho people. Additionally, I oversee new projects called Build Reliable Integrated Next-Generation O2 services (BRINGO2) to improve access to the medical oxygen ecosystem in the country through installing PSA plants and long-term technical support to the MOH. Moreover, I oversee the COVID-19 Response Mechanism (C-19RM) project to respond to the impact of COVID-19 on the health systems.
My experience with MMSc-GHD has fully equipped me to deal with the most challenging health situation. The lessons that I have learned during my stay at MMSc-GHD helped me deeply understand the global health crisis and develop the tools needed to solve the problem through advocacy and evidence-based health program implementation. I have understood how to design, conduct and implement research to deeply understand the bottleneck of the burden of diseases and knowledge gaps in health systems. I have learned how to design, plan, and execute effective health projects from the experience of MMSc GHD. Moreover, through the MMSc-GHD program, I have learned that my patients are my bosses, and I should always be a voice for them. From the immense care and support I received from my research mentors and faculty members at the MMSc GHD program, I can lead my teams by example.
